Supply Ideas

On this page, you'll find a list of supplies and suggestions that the founding congregation of Luminescence, Unitarian Universalists of Santa Clarita Valley (UUSCV), have found to be useful in preparing for the holiday. Feel free to be inventive.

5-Candle Candelabrum Holder
UU of SCV uses basic, tall, individual candle holders. Being as this is the visual focus of the celebration, it pays to get nice looking ones. They are two heights so that the 1st and 5th candle can be higher than the rest, although you can also accomplish that by cutting the 2nd, 3rd and 4th candles themselves shorter.

An alternative option is to use an all-in-one holder, instead of individual holders for each candle.

5 Main Candelabrum Taper Candles
These are typically white or ivory. Many stores carry them.

Tray for Candelabrum candleholders to stand on
This also where congregants place the pebbles for the community pebble portion of the ceremony. It’s important that this be big enough and flat enough that the candleholders sit flat. Some tapered trays and plates don’t allow the candleholders to sit straight vertical. UUSCV’s is silver and round, but yours doesn’t have to be.

Vigil Candles and Candle Drip Guards (Bobeshes)  -- or Flameless Candles
Get enough of these for the whole congregation if you will be lighting actual candles for the candle vigil. These are available in many places. Some come as kits (both candles and drip guards) while with other suppliers the drip guards need to be ordered separately. Don’t try it without the drip guards. People can get hot wax on themselves and hot wax can also drip on your church’s floor or seats.

Decorative Pebbles
These are used for the base on main candelabrum and for the transferring of community stones. Decorative stones dress up the candelabrum display and can also be used for the community pebble dropping ceremony. They are available at art supply and home décor stores.

Trays for passing around Vigil Candles (real or flameless)
UUSCV’s Religious Education children painted some basic plates for handing out the vigil candles and drip guards. Wicker baskets are used for handing out the LED votive candles.

Additional room decorations
These are a great children’s activity for the weeks before the celebration. They can include chalice medalions, luminarios, paper chains, etc.
